news-7One of the fascinating things you can do with The Gimp is the creation of fractal flames.

This short tutorial describes the basic steps - the best way to learn the creation of fractal flames is to play around with the settings.

  1. First start up The Gimp

  2. Create a new file with a dark background (If you like you can choose any background color you want)

  3. The size of the new image does not matter, but keep in mind that the larger the size the longer it will take to render

  4. If you have the blank new picture on your screen go to: Filter-Render-Nature-Flame

  5. If you like the random generated flame just hit the OK Button and after a short time the flame will be generated

  6. If you don't like the random flame hit the Edit button and play around with the setttings.

  7. One of the most important influences of the generated flame is the colormap you choose. There are some presets but it is no problem to choose your own colormap. Just switch back to the Gimp main window an choose another Gradient. After going back to the Flame filter you will find this gradient under „own colormap“.

  8. Tip: You can overlay different flames in The Gimp by creating another layer. Some interesting results are possible with this trick.

  9. If you are satisfied with your result, just save the generadetd image.

  10. Tip: It is possible to save your flame settings: In the Flame window just hit the save button and all your parameters will be saved.

The above steps are only a quick tour to get fast results. There are a lot of parameters in the Flame window you can play with.
