RaesfeldAlthough Bryce comes with some cool textures and the Texture Editor is a powerfull tool, there is another way to create good looking walls.
As you may know, you can use 2D pictures in bryce to build up your terrain. For this tutorial you need an image editing program like Photoshop or PhotoImpact, a good looking picture of a wall and of course Bryce.

Please keep in mind, that trhe better the resolution of the picture the more realistic the result in Bryce will look.

This will work with all versions of Bryce and any kind of image editing program. If you don't want to spend extra money in an image editing program, take a closer look at "The Gimp" - a powerfull free image editor.

  • At the first step, open your wall image in your image editor and convert it to a greyscale picture:
    Original Greyscale
    Original Grey
  • Save the Greyscale image to your harddisk and fire up Bryce.
  • Create a new Terrain in bryce and switch to the Terrain Editor, by hitting the "E" next to the terrain in the Bryce working window.
  • In the Editing Tools hit the small sphere next to "Picture"
    Edit

  • The standard "file open dialogue" will open. Navigate to your saved greyscale pictore and load it into the Terrain Editor.
  • You will now see your image loaded in the Terrain Canvas. Because 2D pictures tend to be too regular for a realistic look we will apply some effects in the next step.s
  • If you swithch to the Bryce working window and do a test render, you will probably notice a couple of spikes on your wall terrain. At a first step scale the height of the terrain down. We have used a Y Value of 4. For a better preview we have also rotated the terrain : X: -90 Y: 90 Z:0.
  • Back in the Terrain Editor swith to the filtering tab, found in the Editing tools. Play with the provided presets until you see a good contrasted picture in the preview. Note: Undo works by hitting: strg+z.
We have filtered our terrain with the fourth preset form the left - the one that looks like a wave.
In Bryce it is always a good idea to play around with the tools :-)
  • Now switch back to the main Bryce window and do another test render.
  • If  the render comes close to the result you want to have, save the scene.
  • Do some fine tuning in the Terrain Editor until you are satisfied with the results.
  • At last  apply a good looking material to  the terrain and render:
    render

For this tutorial we have used a small resolution texture and the terrain was set to the normal resolution. As said in the beginning: higher resolution=better results. But also higher render times. For best results you should use a terrain picture with a resolution equal or larger then the terrain resolution !
