Mask RenderingThis tutorial describes how to combine two pictures with using the mask rendering option from Bryce.
Note:The steps how to apply the mask to your picture is dependent on what Image program you use

  • Create the first of the two pictures in Bryce and render it as usual to disk.picture one
  • In the same Bryce scene select the object you want to "serve" as a mask. In the picture above it was the stone gate. In the rendering options select mask rendering.
  • Do a test render an when you are satisfied with the result, choose render to disk. You should finish with a result similar the picture below..
    maks
  • Create the second version of your picture. In this example I have only changed some sky and material settings, which results in the following picture.
    outside
  • Make sure that all created pictures (version1, version2 and the mask render) have the same dimensions.
  • Start your image editng program and load version1 of the rendered pictures. Choose the "load mask from disk" option in your image editing program" and choose the maks rendering. Depending on what image editing programm you use, it could happen that you have to convert the mask rendering picture to a graysclae picture first. After that you should have version 1 of your picture with the selected area on your screen. In this example only the stone gate is selected. Now choose the mask tool and choose the "add to mask" option. Select all content you want to add to your mask. In this exeample it was the "interior" of the stone gate.
  • Now choose -edit - copy in your image program and open the second version of your picture.
  • With the second version active on your screen, choose -edit - paste.
  • Maybe you have to do some "fine tuning". E.g.: I have to do a slightly reposition of the pasted content to fit in perfectly .
  • At a last step combine all objects and your are finished. My result is shown below.
    finished
  • The "combinations" are done with Ulead's Photoimpact, but it should be easy to follow this tutorial in any other image editing program, which offers a "mask option"
  • A larger version of this image is available in the Bryce Galleries.
